Mnemba Island Protects the Suni Antelope
Over 50 of the diminutive Suni antelope which live on Mnemba Island were captured and translocated to the Jozani Forest Reserve on the main island of Zanzibar. In the absence of any predation, the Suni had multiplied on Mnemba and were occurring at too high a density. Mnemba's donation of these little antelope has improved the species' status at Jozani.
Fun Conservation Lessons at Mnemba
In order to protect and preserve the rich and fragile ecosystem of the Zanzibar Archipelago surrounding CC Africa's beautiful Mnemba Island, the lodge has embarked an ongoing campaign to inform and inspire the youth from the nearest community through interactive and exciting Conservation Lessons.
The latest Conservation Lessons in November 2006, addressed the impact of marine litter on the wildlife and coral reefs. The use of role playing, games and 'hands on' conservation activities resulted in the eager participants learning a great deal about the importance of looking after their natural resources which is imperative for the long-term conservation of the marine area.
Conservation Lessons at Matemwe
Mnemba staff visit the local village of Matemwe to provide conservation lessons which teach school children about coral reef ecosystems, and the importance of conserving them. Special guided snorkelling trips are a highlight of these lessons which also discuss the dangers of pollution to sea turtles and the fragility of the reefs. The showing of documentary films and provision of reading material is also part of the lesson.
