The Karoo and winter-rainfall Fynbos regions of the Western Cape contain more endemic plant and animal species than any other part of South Africa, while communities of fish, penguins, seals and other marine life are concentrated along the nutrient-rich West Coast. The high-altitude grasslands of the eastern escarpment are of particular interest to birdwatchers and botanists, but threatened by afforestation.

Phinda has been the catalyst for the regional swing in land use from cattle farming to wildlife-based ecotourism.
Ngala is engaged in numerous sustainable development projects at the neighbouring Welverdiend community, and applies strict environmental impact principles at its three distinct operations.
Kwandwe is engaged in numerous habitat and wildlife management programmes as well as sustainable development projects in neighbouring communities. All of the large mammal species which formerly occurred in the region have been reintroduced to Kwandwe's 15 000 hectares, and healthy populations of Black Rhino, Wild Dog, Cheetah and Lion are back in a part of the country where they had been absent for over 100 years.
At over 70 000 hectares, Madikwe provides a sanctuary for endangered Black Rhino and Wild Dog, as well as rare Sable antelope. The reserve lies at an ecological transition between the bushveld and the Kalahari, so supports a rich biodiversity.

Located on the southwestern corner of the Kruger National Park, there are no restricting fences, thus enabling the animals to roam freely just as nature intended.
Kirkman's Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoiled wilderness and of the Sand River, is regarded as one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.
