Conservation Education for the children of Namibia

25 Sep 2007

CC Africa is delighted to be participating in WTM's World Responsible Travel Day on the 14th of November. We decided to make a big fuss of Responsible Travel at all our lodges; through creating awareness amongst our staff and guests about the need for caring for our land, our people and our animals. Each lodge has been challenged to come up with an initiative to support the day, and will be celebrating day in their own unique way.

In 2006, Soussusvlei Mountain Lodge started sponsoring children from poor schools all over Namibia to attend a 4 day course at NADEET (The Namibia Desert Environmental Education Trust)www.nadeet.org. This wonderful non-profit organization has a small camp at the southern end of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

The course covers sustainable living in arid environments, solar cooking, water conservation, alternative energy, biodiversity, and desert ecology. The children also watch videos, go for guided desert hikes and enjoy an afternoon of sand boarding in the dunes. The children are then welcomed with drinks and cookies to Soussusvlei Mountain lodge, where they are given a talk on how the money for their trip was raised. The importance of sustainable ecotourism and their role in preserving the natural beauty of Namibia's wild places is stressed.

For the 14th of November, World Responsible Tourism Day, Sossusvlei Mountain lodge is going to take all the lodge staff to NADEET for the same course they send the children on. Most of the staff come from the surrounding communities, therefore this conservation education will help raise the profile of the importance of ecotourism and protecting the environment in the lodge and the communities.
