KENYA

Responsible safaris in Kenya

The shrinking highland forests around Mount Kenya are the focus of conservation action, while ecotourism in the unique remnant Kakamega rainforest is helping to secure biodiversity. Kenya's human population is dependent upon fresh water from forested highlands. Extensive wildlife areas in northern and eastern Kenya support unique Somali arid-zone wildlife.

EFFORTS IN KENYA

Support for the protection of Kakamega forest

CC Africa provides an annual grant to the work of the Kakamega Environmental Education Program (KEEP) in western Kenya. Kakamega is Kenya's only true rainforest with an enormous wealth of biodiversity, but is threatened with encroachment from expanding human settlement.

KEEP works with teachers and children to promote the value of Kakamega as an important water catchment, a site for renewable forest resources and a source of income through ecotourism. KEEP chairman Wilberforce Okeka has been sponsored to visit Kichwa Tembo to see the benefits of ecotourism and the company's Positive Health program, while several Kichwa guides have travelled to Kakamega.
