CC Africa Monitors Endangered Birds in Tanzania
25 Oct 2007
CC Africa has provided funding to the Wildlife Conservation Society of Tanzania (WCST) for the long-term monitoring of two highly threatened and understudied bird species in the East Usambara Mountains- the long-billed tailorbird and the Amani sunbird.
To date, the project has successfully achieved its objectives and preliminary monitoring will provide information to assist in the formulation of conservation strategies that will ensure the protection of these birds. Recent gold-mining activity and significant tree-cutting in forests surrounding Amani Nature Reserve has threatened forest-edge species like the sunbird and tailorbird. Monitoring the populations of these two bird species in the ensuing years will be essential in determining whether the numbers are increasing, decreasing, or stabilising. This information will then be used in conjunction with habitat disturbance, to determine an effective strategy for the protection of these beautiful birds.
